  • What should I look for when buying a bluray player?

Posted by admin on January 17th, 2010 and filed under BluRay | 3 Comments »

I want to buy a bluray player. I read some reviews on cheaper models and people have said that sometimes they can’t even play certain bluray discs. I want to avoid this without spending a whole lot of money. What features should I be aware of when shopping for bluray players?

1.) Read the reviews. Cnet is a good place for this.

2.) Buy a newer player. Most of the issues with Blu-ray players is their speed and their compatibility with technological updates. To be up to date you want a Profile 2.0 player (aka BD Live).

3.) All Blu-ray players will play Blu-ray discs, DVDs and CDs. However, some are also able to play SACDs and DVD-As if you’re interested in surround sound music. Obviously, this only matters if you have a surround sound system.

4.) Since Blu-ray is a relatively new and developing technology, firmware updates are sometimes released. A WiFi-ready player makes this easy. At the very least you should have the ability to update via USB or ethernet.

5.) If you have a surround sound system, you’ll want to iron out the HD audio soundtracks.

Based on Cnet’s reviews, the best players currently available are:

    LG BD390
    PS3
    Samsung BD-P3600
    Samsung BD-P4600
    Samsung BD-P1600
    Samsung BD-P2500

Why do we have to update the software of bluray players, if I never had to with my DVD player?

Posted by admin on January 17th, 2010 and filed under BluRay | 2 Comments »

Am I the only one who’s bothered by having to connect bluray players to the internet?

I think the answer to your question has two parts. One, yes the blu-ray specification is evolving, and there are players being released with bugs that need patching. The other side of the coin is that the internet is also evolving, and networked devices are popping up everywhere. When DVD was first released in 1995-97, the internet was in its infancy as far as consumer adoption was concerned, and most people would have had no way of updating firmware over the internet. Once a product was released, that was it. To do an update of anything, say adding a new audio format like Dolby Digital or DTS you had to send it to a certified repair shop or buy a new player. There were companies like Meridian that offered upgrades of both software and hardware for their equipment, but you had to ship it back and forth from their headquarters.

Personally, although I agree it can be a hassle, I like to have my gear hooked up as much as possible, because it keeps my player as up to date and bug free as possible. Down the road it can also give it added functionality. Take my Panasonic plasma TV for example. When I bought it, all I could do was watch TV over cable and YouTube videos. Now I can stream Amazon video on demand, because Panasonic and Amazon reached a deal a few months later. Without that internet connection on my TV, I couldn’t have gotten that feature.

In all likelihood, you can also update your blu-ray player by downloading the file to a usb key, and then plugging it in to the usb slot of your player. I know I can do that on mine.

Sorry for the long answer, but I hope it answered your question.

Where would I go to shop for a DVD rack/cabinet?

Posted by admin on January 17th, 2010 and filed under DVD Rack | 7 Comments »

I saw a few at target and best buy but would furniture stores have them? I really can’t think of anywhere else to look. Thanks for the help.

You are sitting at your computer, on the Internet. Do you really need more direction?
O.K., to restate the obvious, Google "DVD Storage Rack" and see how many options (483,000 entries) come up, without even having to get dressed or starting up your gas hog.

My DVD rack is full, How can I store my dvds tidily and organised?

Posted by admin on January 17th, 2010 and filed under DVD Rack | 4 Comments »

I have hundreds of DVDS so buying more racks is out of the equation! I like my DVDs in order and tidy, what can i do to achieve this?

You could make this into a built-in, paint and mount it to the wall.

Where can I get a dvd storage cabinet?

Posted by admin on January 17th, 2010 and filed under DVD Storage | 1 Comment »

I have about 550 dvds and am looking for an inexpensive dvd storage cabinet? Any suggestions??

Beth, your best bet is a lot of choices, so you know that you shopped hard for the best buy. Don’t get mad at me, I’m going to give you that.

This is my favorite shopping site. When you pull up this page your choices will vary between over 11,000 choices, to about 8,000 choices, I don’t know why.

Many are too small for the size of your collection, but that’s hard to control. They top out at about $9,000.

This different search input there seems to narrow out many small cases, the average number of choices is only about 750, and the price only tops out about $4,700.

Luckily, you can limit your maximum price at the top of the page, and that will narrow the choices.

Baby girl, you got some shopping to do.

Can you make an audio recording on to blank a DVD storage disc.?

Posted by admin on January 17th, 2010 and filed under DVD Storage | 3 Comments »

Audio CD’s only have 700MB storage capacity. I wondered if you can use a DVD for audio recording as they have around 1.4 GB.

There is actually an Audio-DVD specification for multi-channel audio using DVDs. You can probably still find and buy Audio DVDs.

However, most regular DVD players can’t play Audio DVds. You can certainly store any type of file you want but most likely you can play those files only on a PC, although there are DVD players that will play MP3s from a data DVD.

Sixteen Candles: Joslyn’s DVD Movie Pick of the Week

Posted by admin on January 17th, 2010 and filed under DVD Movies | 25 Comments »

Not sure what DVD you should rent this weekend???? Not to worry-I’m bringing you our ClevverTV DVD Pick of the Week in just a few seconds!

Hello everyone-I’m Joslyn Davis in Beverly Hills welcoming you to a brand new ClevverTV segment, where we’ll help you weigh your options when it comes to watching movies. So here’s how it’s gonna work-We’ll be bringing you older movies that you probably haven’t seen before that are absolute must-watch-films! We’ll tell you who’s it in it, what it’s about and why it’s so amazing! Of course I’d love to hear from you guys too, so if you have a movie that you think I should suggest, just leave a comment and let me know. The only rule here is that it must have been out on DVD for at least 3 years! That way we know for sure that everyone will be seeing something fresh and new.

For my first DVD pick, we’ll have to rewind about 25 years or so ago…but the main chatacter in this film will probably look familiar to you all, because she is currently one of the stars on “The Secret Life of the American Teenager.” Her name is Molly Ringwald and WAY back in 1984 she also starred in my alltime favorite movie, “16 Candles!” directed by the late John Hughes For those of you saying to yourself that this movie is probably old and boring, just hear me out!

The story follows Ringwald’s character, Sam, on her 16th Birthday. The only problem is that absolutely no one remembers! But, sadly that’s just the tip of the iceberg. Poor Sam has to endure more embarrassment than any person ever should, plus her sister’s getting married, a foreign exchange student invades her house, the nerdiest guy in school wants to date her, and her crush seems to have no idea she’s even alive…

I can’t give anymore details away, but I feel like I should also add that Sam’s crush in the movie, Jake Ryan, who was played by Michael Schoeffling, is hands down the hottest guy to ever live.

ClevverTV Fans—YOU must watch this DVD-and after you do, leave a comment and tell us what you thought. I’m telling you, this movie is a coming of age classic. Don’t forget to leave a video suggestion of another DVD you’d like us spotlight and if we do, we’ll make sure to mention your name!

Thanks for Watching ClevverTV’s DVD Pick-I’m Joslyn Davis-see you next time!

Sixteen Candles was directed by John Hughes and stars Molly Ringwald, Michael Schoeffling, Anthony Michael Hall, and John Cusack.
